THE EXHIBITION

The theme of this exhibition is trees, inviting artists to portray one of the planet’s most important and beautiful resources. We encouraged artists to seek out trees in any season and depict whatever aspect of them they found most engaging and inspiring; whether the entire tree, a leaf, branch, fruit, flower, or seed.

This exhibition explores two branches of the same tree. The first is the Botanical Art Branch. Artists are invited to engage in the traditional art of creating botanically accurate 2-D portrayals of trees in hand applied media. The second branch of this call is the Open Media Branch: botanically inspired 2D or 3D pieces depicting tree subjects or created from materials derived from trees (wood, bark, etc.).

This exhibition will be hung in conjunction with Out of the Woods - Celebrating Trees in Public Gardens, The New York Botanical Garden Third Triennial, an international juried traveling exhibition of artwork by members of the American Society of Botanical Artists. All works in this exhibition depict specimen trees among the living collections of botanical gardens and arboreta around the world. Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson

Peter Wyse Jackson is the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden and George Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. As one of the world’s foremost and best known botanists and plant conservationists, his publications include twelve books and over 250 scientific papers and other articles. Wyse Jackson has been a member of the boards of numerous botanical, conservation and horticultural organizations around the world and has played an influential role in reshaping and leading the international botanic garden community over the past two decades. In St. Louis, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, a member of the Board of Commissioners of Tower Grove Park, a member of the Board of Webster University, an Ex Officio Trustee of the Academy of Science St. Louis and an ex officio member of the St. Louis Regional Chamber. In 2016 he served as Distinguished Juror for The Beauty of Botanicals international juried exhibition of contemporary botanical art held in Kirkwood, Missouri.

Michael Schoenewies

Michael Schoenewies is an artist and photographer who can capture thought provoking images using a toy camera, iPhone or any device you hand him, along with his favorite Canon. He finds beauty in decay; both in organic matter and our built environments that are slowly being taken back by nature and time. He has also explored the large and small scale structures that are built in man’s scientific pursuits.

Michael has been in a number of invitational photo shows and has had the opportunity to photograph at multiple NASA facilities and the Large Hadron Collider (CERN) in Switzerland.

Michael began his undergraduate education at Florissant Valley Community College. After completing the advanced studio art courses, Michael then attended Lindenwood University receiving his BFA in studio art. Michael uses his talent daily as a designer at a St. Louis based mobile marketing firm and volunteers with CAIRN, a cave archaeology nonprofit, to photograph and 3D scan archaeological sites.

Jody is the immediate past president of the American Society of Botanical Artists, a member of its steering committee for Botanical Art Worldwide: America's Flora, and a Studio Artist at the Foundry Art Centre.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to all artists 18 years & older, world-wide, both
amateur & professional, working in all styles & schools of
thought. This includes alternative and traditional artwork.

ENTRY SPECIFICATIONS

All media in 2D & 3D forms will be considered. 2D work must be suitably framed and prepared to hang with all hardware readily attached. There is no minimum size requirement and larger pieces must be able to enter the gallery through an 84” x 71” doorway. Once installed, work may not exceed 11 feet in height. Any installation or digital works must speak with Exhibitions Manager
to coordinate presentation. A maximum of 3 entries per artist may be submitted for consideration. Artists may submit entries the following ways: 1) through the FAC website using the online form, 2) on a CD or USB flashdrive (CD/flashdrive will not be returned), or 3) via e-mail to exhibitions@foundryartcentre.org. For emailed entries, include required entry information with each image sent as it corresponds to entry form. Limit 2 jpegs per artwork: 1 full view & 1 (optional) detail or alternate view. Title each jpeg file to correspond with the # on the entry form as such:
yourlastname_entry#.jpg. Each jpeg must be limited to 1024 pixels on the longest side. Submissions that do not comply with these rules will not be presented to the juror.

ENTRY FEE

Artists may submit up to three works for a non-refundable processing fee of $35. Foundry Art Centre members may submit up to three works for a non-refundable fee of $24.

EXHIBITION SPACE

The Foundry Art Centre is a dynamic, interactive center dedicated to the creation & presentation of contemporary visual and performing arts. Our mission is to connect people with the arts through exhibitions, studio artists, performances, & education. Featuring a state-of-the-art gallery, the Foundry hosts national and international juried fine art exhibitions and curated traveling exhibitions.

PUBLICITY

The Foundry Art Centre reserves the right to photograph and reproduce, in color or black & white, all artworks accepted for this exhibition, regardless of copyright, for educational and/or publicity purposes.

SALES, LIABILITY, AND INSURANCE

The Foundry Art Centre will retain a 35% commission on all sales directly attributed to the exhibition. All prices (including frame and matte) set by the artist at the time of entry should include the 35% commission. The price will remain the same price for the duration of the exhibition. Foundry Art Centre provides standard insurance at 50% of retail on all exhibited works while on premises. Artist is responsible for work in transit to and from.

DELIVERY & PICK-UP

Accepted works are to be hand-delivered or shipped in a single reusable crate(s)/carton(s). Include with each work one 3’’x 5’’ card listing Name, Address, Phone, Title, Media, Dimensions, and Price. Attach card to the back of 2D work or base of 3D work. Accepted works must remain for the duration of the exhibition.
Works must be shipped at the artist’s expense to the Foundry Art Centre. Accepted artists shipping their work must include prepaid charges for return shipping. Shipped artwork submitted without pre-paid return shipping labels (no stamps) will be disposed of at the close of the exhibition.
Hand-delivered works must be picked up at the close of the exhibition or work becomes property of FAC to dispose of as it sees fit.
